The center of Port Covo was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755, from which now is the main square (Largo Marquês de Pombal) inspired by the ideals of Pombaline architecture.
In the mid-18th century, it was a small settlement at the foot of a small bay. Covo refers to the fishing net for catching lobsters, and in the locality discovers good restaurants of fresh fish and seafood. It is still characterized as a small fishing community, but it is tourism that drives its growth.
In Largo, you discover good restaurants, souvenir shops and the Church dedicated to Our Lady of Soledade (patron saint of fishermen), from the 18th century in rococo style.

The parties in honor of Our Lady of Soledade take place on the last weekend of August, with various musical and traditional events. On the 29th there is Bath 29, an ancient tradition that materializes in a dive at 7 am.

Pessegueiro Island Beach is a 10-minute drive from the center of Porto Covo. It’s a vast, watched-in sand with a blue flag. It is one of the most popular beaches in this area, attracting tourists, water sports practitioners and sport fishermen.

On the horizon is the island of Pessegueiro, which inspired the musician Rui Veloso to write a composition. In summer, tourists, mostly Portuguese, visit the island.
The peach island is totally uninhabited, kingdom of seagulls. Unlike rui velos’ famous music, Peach trees never existed on the island, but it was one of the first centers of human activity in the region. The first settlements date back to the Cargian trade.

Beaches:
In the village of Porto Covo there is Praia Grande, one of the most sought after by locals and tourists. Situated next to the north exit of Porto Covo, at the foot of the garden. With good access, spacious and sheltered by the cliff, it is one of the most popular during the summer.
It holds blue flag and is quite frequented by surfers.

Among other beaches in the region are Espingardeiro Beach, Praia Pequena, Buizinhos Beach and Porto Covo Bay, smaller ones.

Small Beach:
Tiny sand wedged in the cliff in the center of Porto Covo. From the cliff is a fantastic sunset.

Buizinhos Beach:
Going down to the end the street Vasco da Gama - the main street of Porto Covo - you reach the viewpoint that gives access to this small beach, so known because of the tiny shells that exist there and that were used in local handicrafts.

Charming village in the middle of the Natural Park on the trail of the Rota Vicentina, a holiday location of excellence.

location:
Odemira is a Portuguese village belonging to the Alentejo region and sub-region of the Alentejo Coast.
It is the headquarters of the largest Portuguese in territorial extension, with 1 720.60 km² of area.

The municipality of Odemira is characterized by the immense landscape diversity, extending between the plain, the mountains and the sea.

On the coastal strip, there are small beaches that cut the cliffs and traditional fishing ports. Of its 55 km of Atlantic coast, 12 km are beach, of which are worth mentioning for its natural beauty: Malhão, Milfontes, Franquia, Farol, Furnas, Almograve, Zambujeira and Carvalhal.

The entire coastal area of the municipality is integrated in the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina.

The central strip, cutting the county from south to north, makes the orographic transition between the heath, dominant in the coastal strip, and the mountain, dominant in the inner strip. In this space, we find the main urban agglomerates of the municipality, such as São Teotónio, Boavista dos Pinheiros, Odemira and São Luís.

This central strip corresponds to the space of public services, the main commercial units and the main company-fixing parks.

The settlement of the municipality is quite remote, as evidenced by the numerous traces of cultures prior to Romanization and the testimonies of later cultures.

Culture and Leisure:
- Ponte D. Maria or Ponte de Santa Clara-a-Velha
- Santa Clara Inn
- Walls of the ancient castle of Odemira (existing sections)
- Church of Mercy of Odemira
- Fort of St. Clement

economy:
The municipality of Odemira has a business structure with strong weight in the tertiary sector (59%), followed by the primary sector (31%) and secondary sector (10%), and its four pillars are the agroforestry sectors (considering agriculture, forest and livestock), tourism, trade/services, industry and fisheries/marine resources.

The primary sector occupies 1/3 of the economic activities, presenting as a tourist municipality, but with a strong rural component, namely in agriculture, forestry, livestock and forestry.

The secondary sector has a less significant expression in the territory, however, it seems to have found areas of development where to grow, particularly in the agri-food industry.

The tertiary sector represents 59% of the business dynamics of the municipality of Odemira, of which retail trade and services stand out.

Trade is one of the ancestral activities that, from the point of view of investment flows, has shown a very interesting mobility over the years. Territorially, this activity accompanied the demographic and economic drift of the interior to the coast of the municipality.

Santo André is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém in the Alentejo region and in the Alentejo Coastal sub-region with 74.32 km² of area and 10 647 inhabitants (2011), thus having a population density of 143.3 inhabitants/km² and is 13 km from Santiago do Cacém and 20 km from Sines.

In the mid-1970s, hundreds of families attracted by the offer of work offered by the Sines Industrial Complex began to take place in the parish, in the Areal area.
The town of Vila Nova de Santo André, which only recently took the capital of the parish, does not correspond to the old village still existing and thriving: the original village is 3 kilometers from the austere urban core created in the 1970s in an old pine forest.

The new city, which until 1991 had not even managed existence as a parish, is, in fact, an isolated urban spot with characteristics of metropolitan surroundings of Sines, implanted in the middle of the semi-rural Alentejo area, predominantly constituted by residents with strong connection to the industrial city of Sines. It was initially thought to be 100,000 inhabitants, created from scratch to serve as a dormitory to the Industrial Complex of Sines.
The current city of Vila Nova de Santo André now has about 11,000 inhabitants and the parish is about 13,000, and is therefore the most populous city of Santiago do Cacém.
With the extinction of the Sines Area Office in 1989, the administration of this territory became the responsibility of the Municipality of Santiago do Cacém.
The then Urban Center of Santo André was elevated to Vila on June 20, 1991 and the City on July 1, 2003, with the designation of Vila Nova de Santo André.

Today, the City, with a heterogeneous population of multicultural characteristics, has a life of its own, leaving far behind the idea of being the dormitory of the Industrial Complex of Sines.
The city of Vila Nova de Santo André, which develops with high entrepreneurial dynamics, offers its population and visitors high quality of life, where they can enjoy safe and well-maintained public spaces.

Vila Nova de Milfontes is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Odemira, district of Beja, located on the north bank of the mouth of the river Mira. It is inserted in the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina and has 75.88 km² of area.

At the end of the Christian reconquest, the Alentejo coast was a sparsely populated and disorganized territory, as such, the King of Portugal D. Afonso III made large donations to the Order of Santiago as rewards for its important role in the war against the Moors. In 1486, D. João II founded a new village, in the place called Milfontes, with the purpose of protecting and developing commercial transactions. It detached its territory from the municipality of Sines, to which it previously belonged, and thus created a new municipality that lasted between 1486 and 1836.

Because it is located on the coast, this region was often ravaged by pirates, who pillaged and assaulted the population and vessels. In the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, the Maghrebi Corsican afflicted the Portuguese coasts in a dramatic way. To face this climate of fear and instability, at the end of the sixteenth century it was ordered to build the fort of São Clemente (castle of Milfontes).

This locality is linked to the great feat of Portuguese aviation that was the first crossing area between Portugal and Macau, carried out by Brito Paes and Sarmento Beires. It was on April 7, 1924 that the pilots departed from Campo dos Coitos, near Milfontes, towards the East. In honor of the aviators and their historical achievement, a monument was erected in Praça da Barbacã, next to the fort, that recalls the heroic journey. It should be noted that Commander Brito Paes was a native of the municipality of Odemira, more specifically of Colos.

Culture and Leisure:
- Fort of São Clemente or Castle of Vila Nova de Milfontes
- Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina
- Mother Church: Church of Our Lady of Grace (Vila Nova de Milfontes)
- Hermitage of São Sebastião (Vila Nova de Milfontes)
- Festivals and Pilgrimages
- Our Lady of Grace is the patron saint of Milfontes, being held annually on August 8 a feast in her honor, with the river procession being the highlight of the celebrations. The tourism fair, where there is musical entertainment, gastronomic tents, etc. The parish has two annual fairs, which take place in Brunheiras on May 1 and August 8.

Economic activities:
The main economic activities of the parish are tourism, trade and services, agriculture, livestock, fishing (the port of the Canal is the largest fishing port in the county), construction and also forest production.

history:

Its name derives from The Mooring Governor Kassim and the Order of Santiago.
Endorsed in a strategic geographical location, human populations have sought this region since remote times to establish itself. The excavations carried out in the Old Castle, where the Roman ruins of Miróbriga are located, show that the region has been inhabited since prehistory.
The ruins of Miróbriga represent one of the most striking traces of the occupation of the Romans in southwestern Portugal.
It was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1940. The Roman city stretches for more than 2 km, featuring ruins of housing buildings, paved streets, a racetrack, a bathing, a bridge and a forum.
With Roman colonization, it developed into the commercial area around the forum. The termes, among the best preserved in Portugal. Relatively close to the terme, there is a bridge with a single semicircular arch. The hippodrome is the only fully known in Portuga and is located farther from the center.
It was around 712 and already after the decline of Miróbriga that the Moors reached the territory, building the castle on the hill in front; it is even thought that the name Kassem will be linked to the Mooring villager. The Moorish occupation lasted until the 19th century. XII and many battles for the reconquest took place in the territory until, in 1217, he returned definitively to the possession of Christians, and D. Afonso II confirmed the donation of his father to the Order of Skewers.

economy:

In the municipality, activities related to the primary sector predominate, followed by secondary and tertiary activities.
Agriculture still maintains great importance, with 43.9% of the municipality’s area destined for agricultural exploration, especially the cultivation of cereals for grain, temporary grassland and forage crops, industrial crops, pousio, olive groves, grassland and permanent pastures.
Livestock farming is also of some importance, particularly in the breeding of birds, sheep and pigs.
About 7785 hectares of its territory are covered with forest.
Thus, agriculture, swine farming and rice husking are the most important activities, followed by industry, namely self-catering workshops, civil construction, civil locksmithing, marble processing, wood sawing and cork processing.

Culture and leisure:

There are many popular and cultural manifestations in the county: the feast of Our Lady of Grace, held on the last Sunday of May, with various religious ceremonies, namely prayer meetings, and the annual fairs, on the fourth Sunday of April and the fourth Sunday of July; Santiagro, ’Agricultural Fair’, in May, of economic and cultural promotion; FATAL - Alentejo Coastal Handicraft and Tourism Fair; the traditional Green Grass festivals, both in July; the Monte Fair in September; the traditional festivals of Aldeia dos Chãos in August and The Day of the Municipality, on July 25.

In handicrafts, we highlight the latoaria works, lace, embroidery, clay and cork work, tapestry and wood.

As a cultural installation, the municipality has the Municipal Museum of Santiago do Cacém, in which the numismatics and archeology sections are to be taken up, the latter representative of human occupation in the region, since the times of the Upper Paleolithic. In the collection of ethnography, highlight the traditional Alentejo cuisine, which joins the recreation of a popular room, which makes counterpoint with another of markedly bourgeois taste and which is part of a remarkable legacy of one of the families of the region - the Counties of Avillez.
In 1895 the first automobile arrived in Portugal, owned by the Count of Avilez, santiago do Cacém;
The title of curiosity, also the 1st Rolls Royce that came to Portugal, came to Santiago do Cacém, owned by José Sande Champalimaud and the car registration with no. 1, in 1904, went also to Santiago do Cacém, on behalf of Augusto Teixeira de Aragão.

Cultura e Lazer:
- Forte de São Clemente ou Castelo de Vila Nova de Milfontes
- Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina

Sines’ story has been shaped by the sea. From prehistory to the present day it was the sea and its resources that defined the economy, the culture, composition and even character of its people, to that extent, the history of Sines is vast from the evidence of the existence of human populations through traces of some of these uncovered stands in archaeological stations such as Palmeirinha and Quitéria, through the Italian Naval School in Sines in the 15th/16th centuries, which trained in shipbuilding engineers for the service of the kingdom and the others kingdoms of Europe, until the agreement between Portugal and England in the 19th century to start the productivity of agriculture, animals and cork in territory on the Alentejo Coast and the development of the villages of Sines, Santiago do Cacém, Odemira, Santo André and Milfontes and the villages of Porto Côvo, Melides, Abela and Grândola.

The twentieth century begins practically with the restoration of the municipality in 1914. The cork industry, fishing and some agriculture and tourism are the basis of Sines’ life until the end of the 1960s, when, in addition to the proximity of the sea, Sines is little distinguished from the rest of the Alentejo.

Already in the middle of the XX, the large industrial complex created by the government of Marcello Caetano in Sines, in 1970, changes the municipality. Vila Nova de Milfontes is a parish in the municipality of Odemira, Beja district, located on the north bank of the mouth of the Mira River. It is inserted in the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina and has 75.88 km² of area.

At the end of the Christian reconquest, the Alentejo coast was a sparsely populated and disorganized territory, as such, the King of Portugal D. Afonso III made large donations to the Order of Santiago as rewards for his important role in the war against the Moors. In 1486, D. João II founded a new village, on the site called Milfontes, with the purpose of protecting and developing commercial transactions. It disannexed its territory from the municipality of Sines, to which it once belonged, and thus created a new municipality that lasted between 1486 and 1836.

Because it was located on the coast, this region was often beset by pirates, who plundered and assaulted the population and vessels. In the 16th to 18th centuries, the Maghreb Corsican distressed the Portuguese coasts dramatically. To cope with this climate of fear and instability, at the end of the sixteenth century he was ordered to build the fort of St. Clement (castle of Milfontes).

This locality is linked to the great achievement of Portuguese aviation that was the first crossing area between Portugal and Macau, carried out by Brito Paes and Sarmento Beires. It was on April 7, 1924 that the pilots left campo dos Coitos, near Milfontes, towards the East. In honor of the aviators and their historical achievement, it was erected in The Square of Barbacã, next to the fort, a monument that recalls the heroic journey. It should be noted that Commander Brito Paes was a native of the municipality of Odemira, more specifically Colos.

Sines is a portuguese city in the District of Setúbal and its history has been shaped by the sea
The municipality is bordered to the north and east by the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, to the south by Odemira and to the west the Atlantic Ocean.

The Phoenicians were the first to explore the region and the Romans made Sines a port near Miróbriga (Santiago do Cacém) - the origin of the word Sines comes from the Latin Sinus, ’clipping of the sea coast’

The population explodes and diversifies, the landscape gains new configurations and the community struggles to maintain its integrity and quality of life, mitigating the negative impacts of the installation of the new units and taking advantage of the positive ones.

Today, more than half of the port traffic in Portugal, mainly containers, is passing through the deepwater port of Sines. And the enlargement of the Panama Canal could give Sines a big boost, provided that a suitable rail link to Spain and Central Europe is finally built.

In the center of the bay of Sines is the large Vasco da Gama Beach, asleep between the pontoons. It is guarded in summer, easy to access and its tour offers quiet walks.

To the east, unveils the friendly Port of Recreation, the only one to the Algarve coast, with 250 seats for leisure boats, electricity, sanitary facilities, laundry, fuel filling station and WiFi.

Next to the beach, the gastronomic festival Tasquinhas Sines takes place in July. Fish and seafood are at the heart of the local cuisine, which comes directly from the auction. Dishes such as seafood açorda and feijoada de buzios are typical examples of the influence of a more rural Alentejo.

Santiago do Cacém is a portuguese city in the Setúbal District, which is the headquarters of one of the largest municipalities in Portugal, with 1 059.77 km² of area.

His name derives from Governor Moorish Kassim and the Order of Santiago.

With a strategic geographical location, human populations have sought this region from remote times to establish themselves since remote times. Excavations carried out in castelo Velho, where the Roman ruins of Miróbriga are located, demonstrate that the region has been inhabited since prehistory.

It was around 712 and already after the decline of Miróbriga that the Moors reached the territory, building the castle on the hill facing; it is even thought that the name Kassem will be linked to the Moorish mayor. The Moorish occupation lasted until the 19th century. XII and many battles for reconquest fought in the territory until, in 1217, he returned definitively to the possession of Christians, and D. Afonso II confirmed his father’s donation to the Order of The Satarians.
