Santiago do Cacém is a portuguese city in the Setúbal District, which is the headquarters of one of the largest municipalities in Portugal, with 1 059.77 km² of area.

His name derives from Governor Moorish Kassim and the Order of Santiago.

With a strategic geographical location, human populations have sought this region from remote times to establish themselves since remote times. Excavations carried out in castelo Velho, where the Roman ruins of Miróbriga are located, demonstrate that the region has been inhabited since prehistory.

It was around 712 and already after the decline of Miróbriga that the Moors reached the territory, building the castle on the hill facing; it is even thought that the name Kassem will be linked to the Moorish mayor. The Moorish occupation lasted until the 19th century. XII and many battles for reconquest fought in the territory until, in 1217, he returned definitively to the possession of Christians, and D. Afonso II confirmed his father’s donation to the Order of The Satarians.

Location:

Melides is a portuguese parish in the municipality of Grândola, an area of approximately 155.2 km2, the parish of Melides, located in the coastal strip, 5 kms from the Atlantic Ocean and in the vicinity of the lagoon of the same name.

From the point of view of the relief presents two distinct zones: on the coast dominated the heaths, of reduced fertility, occupied by pine forests and eucaliptals, and cut by two floodplains of agricultural appetite - Fontaínhas and, especially, the floodplain of Melides, where the cultivation of rice abounds; - in the rest of the area the mountain is predominant, occupied by cork mounted and some pine forest, especially meek.

Melides Beach is located in the long strip of sand that makes the separation between the sea and the Melides Lagoon. Here will have shipwrecked the adventurer Portuguese the sixteenth century, Fernão Mendes Pinto, when he was attacked by corsicanries. His adventures were recorded in the work ’Pilgrimage’

Walking the 4 kms of the road that gives access to the beach, through pine forests and rice pads, you reach Melides, typical Alentejo village, with white houses and quiet streets that is well worth a visit.
The village of Melides must have emerged as a small cluster of fishermen/farmers who gradually concentrated their previously dispersed dwellings. The economic connection of these to the bar seems undoubted to us and the first oracle, Holy Navy, is proof of this.

Its toponym may originate from the Latin militi (military) and, as a curiosity, there is mention of the existence of two villages called Melide, one in Spain, Galicia, and another in Switzerland, next to Lake Lugano.

Within the scope of the heritage are advised the following visits: old urban nucleus of the village, where you can see some buildings of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with balcony windows and wrought iron balconies; ruins of the Church of Santa Marinha (late 19th century). XV - beginnings of the XVI), where are still visible botaréus of unusual dimension; church of St. Peter (20th century. XVII - XVIII) that preserves elements of interest such as the vaulted ceiling of the chancel, a stone lavatory, in the sacristy, boasting the cross of the Order of Santiago and imaginary coeva; the pottery of Master Chico, being worthy of register the oven of typically Roman characteristics; molinological set of Boavista (windmills), from which you enjoy a vast landscape; fountain of the Eyes with a lunch park. It is a copious spring that supplies water to the village and part of the parish, and its surroundings are very pleasant.

After Comporta, Melides is the new destination sensation in Alentejo thanks to its deserted beaches, cork-mounted, days of silence and several new charming hotels...

It’s not really a hidden secret anymore. In recent years, there have been several articles in the national and international press about Melides. After comporta’s success, which the Financial Times even described as ’the Hamptons of Portugal’, it seems that the focus is now redirected a little further south, towards Melides. The celebrated shoe designer, Christian Louboutin, was only the first. With houses around the world, including a castle in France, an apartment in LA and a mansion in Lisbon, the designer swapped Comporta for Melides about six years ago, and his on-site hotel (long-advertised) is already under construction.

Melides presents a set of almost secret refuges, where there is no lack of comfort, elegance and sophistication... And there are several dream homes that the mounted and the pine forest hide. This is the case of the Italian Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano (she sold the Cinzano empire in 1999 to the Campari group and has since been a producer of organic wines in Argentina and Italy), who has built here a holiday retreat already photographed by AD-Architectural Digest North American. The same can be said of belgian architect and designer Vincent Van Duysen, who designed and built an iconic house here, and who has also been entitled to reporting in the New York Times.

The beaches

The municipality of Grândola has the largest stretch of beach in the country, so those who arrive here have plenty to choose from. In addition to the most popular beaches of Tróia, Comporta, Carvalhal and Pêgo, in the Melides region, the best known is Melides Beach, an extensive sandy beach with beach support.
In the vicinity of the beach is the Melides Lagoon that extends to the village through extensive rice pads and small islands where the richness of flora and fauna ensure activities such as bird watching, canoeing or walking.
It follows The New Open Beach, with access from EN 261-2 through a path partially on dirt, covered by pine forests.
Almost always empty, Galé Beach is the lady that follows. A secret that begins to unravel. As well as Praia da Vigia, another paradise, with access by a sandy road with about 5km. By the way, it is worth saying out of curiosity that it is in this area that Christian Louboutin has the house...

Location:

Sines is a Portuguese city in the district of Setúbal and its history has been shaped by the sea
The municipality is bordered to the north and east by the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, to the south by Odemira and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.

It is 160 km south of Lisbon, at the tip of Cabo de Sines that separates the Alentejo coast into 2 parts: to the north extensive beaches of fine sand to Troia and to the south cove beaches that are part of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina.

The Phoenicians were the first to explore the region and the Romans made Sines a port near Miróbriga (Santiago do Cacém) - the origin of the word Sines comes from the Latin Sinus, ’cut of the sea coast’

The best known son of Sines was the navigator Vasco da Gama, knight of the Order of Christ, who entered history when he discovered the sea route to India at the end of the fifteenth century.
From Prehistory to the present day, it was the sea and its resources that defined the economy, culture, composition and even the character of its people, to that extent, the history of Sines is vast from the evidence of the existence of human populations through traces of some of these settlements discovered in archaeological sites such as Palmeirinha and Quitéria, passing through the Italian Naval School in Sines in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, which provided training in naval engineering for the construction of vessels for the service of the kingdom and the other kingdoms of Europe, to the agreement between Portugal and England in the nineteenth century to start the productivity of agriculture, animals and cork in territory on the Alentejo Coast and the development of the villages of Sines, Santiago do Cacém, Odemira, Santo André and Milfontes and the villages of Porto Côvo, Melides, Abela and Grândola.

The twentieth century practically begins with the restoration of the municipality, in 1914. The cork industry, fishing and some agriculture and tourism are the basis of life in Sines until the end of the 60s, when, apart from the proximity to the sea, Sines is little different from the rest of the Alentejo.

In the middle of the twentieth century, the large industrial complex created by the government of Marcello Caetano in Sines, in 1970, changes the municipality. The population explodes and diversifies, the landscape gains new configurations and the community struggles to maintain its integrity and quality of life, mitigating the negative impacts of the installation of the new units and taking advantage of the positive ones.

Today more than half of the port traffic in Portugal already passes through the deep-water port of Sines, especially containers. And the enlargement of the Panama Canal could give a great boost to Sines, provided that an adequate rail connection to Spain and Central Europe is finally built.

In the centre of the bay of Sines is the wide Vasco da Gama Beach, asleep between the pontoons. It is guarded in the summer, easy to access and its promenade provides quiet walks.

To the east, there is the friendly Recreational Port, the only one on the Algarve coast, with 250 places for leisure boats, electricity, toilets, laundry, gas station and WiFi.

Culture and Leisure:

Sines has a fantastic historical heritage from the Castle of Sines, the Fort of Revelim, the Fort of Pessegueiro, the Monument of São Torpes, several churches such as Nossa Senhora da Soledade, Espírito Santo or da Misericórdia, Matriz de São Salvador or Nossa Senhora das Salas, in addition to the fabulous beaches that deserve a swim, you can take the opportunity to go jogging on the beach wall.

Next to the beach, the Tasquinhas Sines gastronomic festival takes place in July. Fish and seafood are at the heart of the local cuisine, which comes directly from the fish market. Dishes such as seafood açorda and búzios feijoada are typical examples of the influence of a more rural Alentejo.

The main events in Sines are the Carnival and the World Music festival.

Education:
Sines has several public basic schools and kindergartens, in addition to private institutions of reference, guaranteeing access to good studies for people from different social classes, which makes the city an excellent location to live and study.

Vila Nova de Milfontes is a parish in the municipality of Odemira, Beja district, located on the north bank of the mouth of the Mira River. It is inserted in the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina and has 75.88 km² of area.

At the end of the Christian reconquest, the Alentejo coast was a sparsely populated and disorganized territory, as such, the King of Portugal D. Afonso III made large donations to the Order of Santiago as rewards for his important role in the war against the Moors. In 1486, D. João II founded a new village, on the site called Milfontes, with the purpose of protecting and developing commercial transactions. It disannexed its territory from the municipality of Sines, to which it once belonged, and thus created a new municipality that lasted between 1486 and 1836.

Because it was located on the coast, this region was often beset by pirates, who plundered and assaulted the population and vessels. In the 16th to 18th centuries, the Maghreb Corsican distressed the Portuguese coasts dramatically. To cope with this climate of fear and instability, at the end of the sixteenth century he was ordered to build the fort of St. Clement (castle of Milfontes).

This locality is linked to the great achievement of Portuguese aviation that was the first crossing area between Portugal and Macau, carried out by Brito Paes and Sarmento Beires. It was on April 7, 1924 that the pilots left campo dos Coitos, near Milfontes, towards the East. In honor of the aviators and their historical achievement, it was erected in The Square of Barbacã, next to the fort, a monument that recalls the heroic journey. It should be noted that Commander Brito Paes was a native of the municipality of Odemira, more specifically Colos.

- Mother Church: Church of Our Lady of Grace (Vila Nova de Milfontes)
- Hermitage of São Sebastião (Vila Nova de Milfontes)

The tourism fair, where there is musical entertainment, gastronomic tents, etc. The parish has two annual fairs, which take place in Brunheiras on May 1 and August 8.

Economic activities:
The main economic activities of the parish are tourism, commerce and services, agriculture, livestock, fishing (the port of the Canal is the largest fishing port in the county), civil construction and forest production.

It is the only municipality in the whole of Alentejo that contains 2 cities within its boundary (Santiago and Santo André). It also has three villages (Cercal, Alvalade and Ermidas-Sado).

Santiago do Cacém is a Portuguese city in the District of Setúbal, is the headquarters of one of the largest municipalities in Portugal, with an area of 1,059.77 km².
It is home to one of the largest municipalities in Portugal, with 1,059.77 km² of area and 29,749 inhabitants (2015 INE), subdivided into 8 parishes.
The municipality is bordered to the north by the term of Grândola, to the northeast by Ferreira do Alentejo, to the east by Aljustrel, to the south by Ourique and Odemira and to the west by Sines and has coastline in the Atlantic Ocean. It is the only municipality in the entire Alentejo that contains 2 cities within its term (Santiago and Santo André). It also has three villages (Cercal, Alvalade and Ermidas-Sado).

history:

Its name derives from The Mooring Governor Kassim and the Order of Santiago.
Endorsed in a strategic geographical location, human populations have sought this region since remote times to establish itself. The excavations carried out in the Old Castle, where the Roman ruins of Miróbriga are located, show that the region has been inhabited since prehistory.
The ruins of Miróbriga represent one of the most striking traces of the occupation of the Romans in southwestern Portugal.
It was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1940. The Roman city stretches for more than 2 km, featuring ruins of housing buildings, paved streets, a racetrack, a bathing, a bridge and a forum.
With Roman colonization, it developed into the commercial area around the forum. The termes, among the best preserved in Portugal. Relatively close to the terme, there is a bridge with a single semicircular arch. The hippodrome is the only fully known in Portuga and is located farther from the center.
It was around 712 and already after the decline of Miróbriga that the Moors reached the territory, building the castle on the hill in front; it is even thought that the name Kassem will be linked to the Mooring villager. The Moorish occupation lasted until the 19th century. XII and many battles for the reconquest took place in the territory until, in 1217, he returned definitively to the possession of Christians, and D. Afonso II confirmed the donation of his father to the Order of Skewers.

economy:

In the municipality, activities related to the primary sector predominate, followed by secondary and tertiary activities.
Agriculture still maintains great importance, with 43.9% of the municipality’s area destined for agricultural exploration, especially the cultivation of cereals for grain, temporary grassland and forage crops, industrial crops, pousio, olive groves, grassland and permanent pastures.
Livestock farming is also of some importance, particularly in the breeding of birds, sheep and pigs.
About 7785 hectares of its territory are covered with forest.
Thus, agriculture, swine farming and rice husking are the most important activities, followed by industry, namely self-catering workshops, civil construction, civil locksmithing, marble processing, wood sawing and cork processing.

Culture and leisure:

There are many popular and cultural manifestations in the county: the feast of Our Lady of Grace, held on the last Sunday of May, with various religious ceremonies, namely prayer meetings, and the annual fairs, on the fourth Sunday of April and the fourth Sunday of July; Santiagro, ’Agricultural Fair’, in May, of economic and cultural promotion; FATAL - Alentejo Coastal Handicraft and Tourism Fair; the traditional Green Grass festivals, both in July; the Monte Fair in September; the traditional festivals of Aldeia dos Chãos in August and The Day of the Municipality, on July 25.

In handicrafts, we highlight the latoaria works, lace, embroidery, clay and cork work, tapestry and wood.

As a cultural installation, the municipality has the Municipal Museum of Santiago do Cacém, in which the numismatics and archeology sections are to be taken up, the latter representative of human occupation in the region, since the times of the Upper Paleolithic. In the collection of ethnography, highlight the traditional Alentejo cuisine, which joins the recreation of a popular room, which makes counterpoint with another of markedly bourgeois taste and which is part of a remarkable legacy of one of the families of the region - the Counties of Avillez.
In 1895 the first automobile arrived in Portugal, owned by the Count of Avilez, santiago do Cacém;
The title of curiosity, also the 1st Rolls Royce that came to Portugal, came to Santiago do Cacém, owned by José Sande Champalimaud and the car registration with no. 1, in 1904, went also to Santiago do Cacém, on behalf of Augusto Teixeira de Aragão.

Cercal do Alentejo presented indispensable reserves of ferrous minerals, useful to various metallurgical and metalworking industries.

Physically, the ore from the Serra das Tulhas mine was similar to the Serra da Mina and Toca do Mocho concessions - it was massive, not very compact and of medium hardness. Sometimes it appeared hard and spongy, but in regions where the manganese content rose a lot, it became a bit earthy.

From a chemical point of view, it can be said that the ore was frankly good. Silica rarely exceeded 5%, and alumina also did not present high levels. As for iron, the content was usually 50% and the manganese had levels ranging from 6 to 13%, which valued the ore very much.
