Carcavelos has a moderate Mediterranean climate due to its proximity to the mouth of the Tagus River and is located about 12 kilometres west of the capital, Lisbon.
The 1.5 kilometre Praia de Carcavelos is the most popular beach on the Lisbon coast, partly due to its proximity to the capital. Also known for its surfing and soft golden sands.
