Inicialmente a povoação, era formada por palhoças de junco muito abundante nesta área. Com o decorrer dos anos alguns pescadores foram-se fixando irreversivelmente, mas situando já em lugar definitivo as suas casas em madeira, assente em estacaria, elevadas do solo, para que as areias das dunas, movidas pelos ventos, não as soterrassem.
Muitos criaram junto delas pequenos quintais, para algumas hortaliças, regadas por água de poços cavados nas areias, com pouca profundidade e sustentados por tábuas.
Com as invasões francesas e a ocupação do país, Portugal é auxiliado pela Inglaterra, seu aliado. A existência do povoado da Cova surge em meados do século XVIII, quando pescadores oriundos das cercanias de Ílhavo, nas suas andanças pela orla costeira, na procura de melhores zonas pesqueiras, acabaram por se fixar junto á margem sul do Rio Mondego, muito perto do mar, na cava de uma duna, o que deu origem ao topónimo Cova.
As pesquisas feitas pelo ilustre covagalense, Comandante João Pereira Mano, revelam que o primeiro registo de um baptismo feito a uma criança nascida na Cova, na Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Lavos, pelo Padre Cura Tomás da Costa, foi a 15 de Julho de 1793, de nome Luís, filho de Manuel Pereira e de Luísa dos Santos, naturais de Ílhavo, tendo os padrinhos a mesma naturalidade. Com este acto, ficou feito um assento oficial probativo da existência do povoado já habitado há alguns anos.
Inicialmente a povoação, era formada por palhoças de junco muito abundante nesta área. Parte delas ficavam desabitadas no inverno, normalmente muito agressivos, que tornavam a vida quase incomportável e agreste neste deserto formado por dunas, regressando alguns pescadores à sua terra natal, nessa quadra.
Com o decorrer dos anos alguns pescadores foram-se fixando irreversivelmente, mas situando já em lugar definitivo as suas casas em madeira, assente em estacaria, elevadas do solo, para que as areias das dunas, movidas pelos ventos, não as soterrassem.
Muitos criaram junto delas pequenos quintais, para algumas hortaliças, regadas por água de poços cavados nas areias, com pouca profundidade e sustentados por tábuas.
Com as invasões francesas e a ocupação do país, Portugal é auxiliado pela Inglaterra, seu aliado. Depois de serem criadas as condições militares necessárias, as tropas inglesas desembarcam, de 1a 5 e de 7 a 8 de Agosto de 1808, no estuário do Rio Mondego, na Figueira da Foz no lado do Cabedelo, comandados pelo Gener
