A Praia da Nazaré é de ocupação humana relativamente recente. As primeiras referências sobre a pesca na Nazaré datam de 1643, no entanto, só no início de oitocentos a população se começou a fixar no areal.

A zona actualmente ocupada pelo casario, era, à época, ocupada por dunas litorais que seriam recortadas, a montante, pela foz do rio Alcoa, que ia desaguar muito a norte da actual (a sul do Porto de Pesca), tendo as várias alterações do leito do rio contribuído para a diversificação da geologia local.

Os pescadores locais habitavam, sobretudo, nas partes altas Sítio e Pederneira dado que os constantes ataques dos piratas argelinos e holandeses tornavam o areal pouco seguro.

Só no séc. XIX, posteriormente às invasões francesas, é que se reuniram condições de segurança necessárias à fixação dos pescadores junto à praia. A Nazaré começou a ser conhecida e procurada, como praia de banhos, em meados do século XIX.
