Embroidery, Porto Boat, São Silvestre and... Manuela Machado are the ’brand images’ of Cardielos and Serreleis, neighboring parishes on the right bank of the Lima River that became ’sisters’ in 2013 after the administrative reorganization of the parishes.

With about 2300 inhabitants, this Union of Parishes has a rich natural heritage such as the viewpoint of São Silvestre, place of pilgrimage and blessing of animals, whose view falls on the diapers of the Lima basin in front of Viana do Castelo. Lands of embroiderers, Cardielos and Serreleis boosted the famous embroidery of Viana do Castelo, which still today are a mark of the county based on a tradition of rural women of more than 100 years ago who, according to history, found in this mester a way to guarantee sustenance when men were mobilized to fight in France.

The Union still has what remains of one of the most important piers located on the Lima River that served the crossing between the two banks of the river, but also the water-cliffs that for centuries transported goods and arrived to, imagine, Jolda, in the Arcos de Valdevez.

And one of the daughters of this land, who ran non-stop, became champion of Europe and later of the whole World in marathon. Today, Manuela Machado, directs an athletics team based in the parish. At the associative level, this Union has a folklore group, cultural and multi-sport center and other recreational associations such as the ADC of Cardielos. The Banda de Gaitas de S.Tiago de Cardielos has shone with its performances and, in sport, Sport União Cardielense has reemerged with a force that catapulted it to the best classification ever in AF Viana do Castelo.
