Located in the municipality of Anadia, in the heart of the Bairrada region, Quinta do Tanque is a historic property of great cultural and heritage value. In the centre of this magnificent estate stands an imposing Manor House with a chapel, testament to a rich family and architectural heritage.

The Manor House, in Pombaline style, was built at the beginning of the 19th century by Captain-Major Albino Xavier Cerveira, father of D. José Xavier Cerveira e Sousa, an illustrious bishop (Funchal, Beja and Viseu) and professor at the University of Coimbra. The latter’s episcopal coat of arms is engraved on the coat of arms that adorns the main façade.

Although its construction dates back to the mid-19th century, the building reflects a distinctly Pombaline style, evoking the aesthetics of the second half of the 18th century. It is believed that it was built on an old residence of the Cerveira family, long established in the region.

The authorship of the project is uncertain, but several scholars point to a connection with the famous sculptor Machado de Castro - possibly as an influence on the choice of architect, or even as the author of the project. This theory is supported by the close relationship between the sculptor and the Brewer family. Machado de Castro, one of the greatest figures in European sculpture of the 18th century, is the author of the famous equestrian statue of D. José I in Terreiro do Paço, in Lisbon.

The main house is distributed over two floors and has a mansard roof in the center. The façade is symmetrical, marked by pilasters that divide it into three parts. On one side, there is a gate dating from the 17th century, before the construction of the current house; on the other, there is the private chapel, considered the property’s ex-libris.

Built by order of D. António Xavier de Cerveira e Sousa, commander of the Order of Christ, this chapel houses the remains of his wife, D. Maria José Pereira e Costa, who died in 1842.

Inside, there is the remarkable Altarpiece of the Saints Physicians, representing Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian. This piece is considered one of the most significant of the Coimbra Renaissance, produced between 1510 and 1530, possibly in a workshop linked to the sculptor João de Ruão, active in Coimbra in the 16th century.

The Quinta do Tanque is also mentioned in the work ’Memórias de Castilho’, by the writer Júlio de Castilho, which vividly portrays the intellectual gatherings and meetings that took place on the property. Interestingly, the family of the writer Júlio Dinis was from the same place and lived near the farm.
