Arronches is a beautiful Alentejo village, seat of the municipality, located very close to the border with Spain, characterized by its white houses brightened by colored bands that surround baseboards, windows and doors.
The origins of Arronches are ancient, however there is not much historical documentation from more remote times, being found all over the county several megalithic monuments from prehistoric times.
Arronches was conquered in 1166 from the Moors, by D. Afonso Henriques, who lost it, having been reconquered by D. Sancho II, in 1235. It fell again to the Moors, being definitively reconquered in 1242, by D. Paio Peres Correia.
Due to its geographic situation, Arronches was an important defense bastion in the Middle Ages, as can be seen from what still remains of the Castle, probably rebuilt on a Moorish structure or even earlier, in 1310. With the loss of strategic importance and the great After the destruction caused by the 1755 earthquake, the Castle gradually deteriorated and much of its material was then used in the construction of local residences and absorbed by the urban expansion of the town, with only the remains of one of its towers surviving to this day.
The Igreja Matriz, a 16th century building that replaced an old Gothic temple dating from 1236, is one of the main monuments of the village, located opposite the beautiful building of the Town Hall (16th century), also highlighting the Church of Misericórdia (16th century), the Convent and Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz from the 16th century, among other monuments present in neighboring towns.
Part of the municipality of Arronches is part of the Natural Park of Serra de S. Mamede, and all of its natural surroundings are of great beauty, hosting a great diversity of species of fauna and flora, providing beautiful landscapes and conditions for the practice of variety of leisure and sports activities.
