Ericeira belongs to the municipality of Mafra and is a traditional fishing village that has developed a lot during the 21st century. It became a World Surfing Reserve on 14 October 2011, after being recognised by the international Save the Waves Coalition. It is the 2nd Reserve to be recognised at a global level, remaining the only one in Europe to this day.
