Fica a poucos Km da Alcobaça



Nascida nos vales dos rios Alcoa e Baça, sabe-se que a área correspondente ao concelho de Alcobaça foi habitada pelos Romanos, no entanto, é aos Árabes, que notoriamente ocuparam a região, a quem devemos a denominação da cidade- Alcobaça, bem como dos dois rios. Podemos ainda comprovar este facto noutras terras adjacentes, com topónimos claramente mouros, como Alfeizerão, Aljubarrota, Alpedriz, entre outros, que nos demonstram o progresso da área, bem como a sua importância, durante o período de ocupação.



Na altura da reconquista, a 8 de Abril de 1153, Afonso Henriques doou as terras aos monges de Cister, concedendo-lhes a obrigação de as desbravarem. Ao longo dos vários reinados, muito território foi cedido a esta ordem, o que deu origem a um vasto território, que iria desde S Pedro de Moel a S. Martinho do Porto e de Aljubarrota a Alvorninha.



Esta zona teria acesso ao mar, que ali formava uma grande lagoa, denominada de Lagoa da Pederneira (actual Nazaré). Nesta, existia um porto, e seria a partir do mesmo que eram transportadas frutas da região para o resto do país.



Os monges Cistercienses tiveram um papel importante na região dos Coutos de Alcobaça (nome da extensão de área, que incluía este concelho e partes dos municípios actuais de Caldas da Rainha e Nazaré). Para além da sua actividade religiosa e cultural, estes procuraram formar a população, tendo aulas públicas desde 1269, nas quais, para além de Humanidades, Lógica e Teologia, ensinavam ainda técnicas agrícolas, o que teve uma grande importância na evolução da região. Estes, arrotearam as terras e secaram pauis, como havia sido acordado. Introduziram ainda culturas em terrenos a si adequados e criaram granjas, gerando, do nada, uma importante região agrícola, que perdura até aos nossos dias, sendo uma das mais produtivas do país.



Alcobaça recebeu foral de D. Manuel I, em 1514.



A 1567 o mosteiro passou a albergar a Congregação Portuguesa, por bula do Papa Pio V, separando-se de Cister (casa-mãe em França) e, no século XVII, a maioria das terras por estes detidas pertenciam já aos habitantes das vilas e seus concelhos.



O terramoto de 1755 afectou grandemente a região e provocou uma inundação, o que levou a intervenções por parte do Marquês de Pombal, que procurou impulsionar a vila após a tragédia. No século XIX, período das invasões francesas, foi pilhado o mosteiro. Mais tarde no mesmo século, em 1833, este esteve novamente a saque, por consequência da extinção das ordens religiosas após a vitória liberal na guerra civil. Os monges detinham, neste período 14 vilas com foral, no entanto, após tal evento apenas duas permaneceram concelho (Alcobaça e Pederneira/ Nazaré).



Da herança que permanece da ocupação destes monges no território de Alcobaça, para além da actividade agrícola, destacam-se ainda belíssimos elementos arquitectónicos, muitos com detalhes manuelinos, pelourinhos, casas rurais e anexos agrícolas, como lagares de varas (séc. XVII e XIX). A nível gastronómico, a doçaria conventual tem grande lugar de destaque, derivado da influência dos monges na região, sendo tradicional o pão-de-ló, que ali ganhou o nome de Alfeizerão, devido à localidade onde é produzido.



Nesta região, são tradicionais os cristais, as peças de olaria e cerâmica.



No mosteiro de Alcobaça estão os túmulos de D. Pedro e D. Inês de Castro, no transepto da igreja, colocados frente a frente.



Alcobaça foi elevada a cidade a 30 de Agosto de 1995.



Hoje, Alcobaça faz parte do distrito de Leiria, histórica província da Estremadura, actual Comunidade Intermunicipal do Oeste, no Centro de Portugal. O seu município tem cerca de 57.000 habitantes e 13 freguesias, distribuídas por um território de 408.14 km2.
