Lagos is a Portuguese city in the district of Faro, region and sub-region of the Algarve, with about 27,949 inhabitants. It is located in the Western Algarve (the western part of the Algarve).

It is the seat of the municipality of Lagos with an area of 212.99 km² and 33,514 inhabitants, subdivided into 4 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north by Monchique, to the east by Portimão, to the west by Vila do Bispo, to the northwest by Aljezur and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean.

The first locality in the region of Lagos, called Laccobriga or Lacóbriga, was founded around 2000 BC by the Conians. This locality was subsequently occupied by Carthaginians, Romans, barbarian peoples, Muslims and finally reconquered by Christians in the thirteenth century.

Due to its location and economic importance, Lagos became a central point for the Portuguese Discoveries, from the fifteenth century onwards; in 1573, it was elevated to city by King D. Sebastião, becoming the capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve, a position it maintained during the Philippine Dominion. In 1755, when it was devastated by the tsunami that also devastated Lisbon, the provisional capital moved to Loulé and then to Faro where it still remains. In the nineteenth century, it actively participated in the French Invasions and the Portuguese Civil War, having managed to regain some economic importance, with the introduction of the first industries from the middle of the century.
