Never losing the title of Town but falling into oblivion, the category of town was reinforced on June 24, 2003 by Regional Legislative Decree No. 29/2003/A, of June 24, of the Legislative Assembly. The populations of Capelas and neighboring parishes demand the restoration of the municipality.
The town of Capelas was an important center for sperm whale hunting, with a whaling operation operating in its small port in the first half of the 20th century. A sperm whale oil and flour factory was installed near the port (Poços). When this activity ended, it fell into ruins and was later demolished, leaving only the main chimney.
